Although Anderlecht are champions, the other places are up for grabs. Tonight Genk – in third place – welcome Club Brugge. Genk are the in-form team with Jelle Vossen and Christian Benteke scoring at will (12 goals in playoffs). Genk have a lot of injuries though, with Thomas Buffel the latest to drop out.
Gent go to Standard and they’ll be hoping that Club Brugge win at Genk so they have more chance of a European place. Neither Gent nor Standard have a recognised striker. Standard have lost all four – injury and suspension – while Gent Coulibaly has announced he’s not motivated and has been taken off the team sheet.
The final game sees Kortrijk play Anderlecht; the champions will be fielding a “reserve team” (Canesin, Molins, De Sutter, J. Lukaku, Kabungu, Mbenza etc.). Sadly, young Dennis Praet is injured.
Tonight: Standard-Gent; Genk-Club Brugge; Kortrijk- Anderlecht. All at 20.00.
Playoff 02
With the two groups finalised, the playoff 02 final will be over two legs between Mons and Cercle Brugge. The first leg is tonight at Mons. The PO2s have not been a success with many players saying they didn’t understand the system. Enzo Scifo has been keen for his ‘new’ team to well and Bob Peeters is a great motivator who always wants to win. I feel Cercle Brugge will go through to meet the fourth-place team in the above-mentioned PO1s. Mons will miss captain Nicaise, while Cercle have an in-form team with Vetokele, Balde and Rudy prominent.
Monday, May 7, 2012 at 8:13AM At the end, there was no surprise. Anderlecht are champions! The manner was surprising however, with Guillaume Gillet equalising against Club Brugge from the penalty spot with the last kick of the game. It was a penalty, however, with Almeback pushing Dieumerci Mbokani in the 94th minute.
The game itself can be forgotten, as can the playoffs themseves. Thoughts now, at Anderlecht anyway, turn to which players will move on. Juhasz, Matias Suarez, Biglia and Mbokani could all leave, but they will all be watching the Champions League final closely. If Chelsea win, Anderelcht will have to qualify for next season's Champions League; if Bayern Munich win - and they should, then the Belgian champions will go directly into the Champions League pools. That might be enough for one or two players to stay on. Regardless, I think Lucas Biglia and Roland Juhasz are the ones most likely to say enough is enough.
In yesterday's other game, Christian Benteke scored an 88th minute winner for Genk against his old club - Standard Liege - in a 3-2 win at Sclessin. Benteke has always felt he was harshly treated by Standard and revenge was late but sweet. Vossen scored again for Genk, as did teenage Imoh Ezekiel for Standard.
That result means that Club Brugge, Genk and Gent will be fighting for the other places in Europe. Anything could happen and it probably will. Even if the last few games are exciting, there will still be a majority of fans, players and coaches who are anti play-offs.
Sunday, May 6, 2012 at 12:56PM Unless there is a mighty surprise, Anderlecht will be crowned champions for the 31st time this afternoon. They just need one point from the home game with Club Brugge. Anderlecht will be without the suspended Matias Suarez, probably to be replaced by Patou Kabangu. Club Brugge have problems as Hoefkens and Hogli are also suspended. In truth, the league is staggering to the finish line with the playoffs offering little. Anderlecht won the classic title and they will almost certainly win the league post-playoffs. No team has looked like threatening them and Anderlecht would be worthy champions.
There is some interest in who will be second (and third) but the playoffs have hardly created excitement - unlike last year. The same system will be in place next season and then it will be reviewed and - I think - scrapped.
In today's other game, Standard play Genk. Both teams will be hoping to profit from last night's surprise results when Gent lost at home to Kortrijk.
Thursday, May 3, 2012 at 4:22PM Yesterday, Anderlecht defeated Gent and Genk had an excellent win at Kortrijk. This means that Anderlecht just need a point on Sunday when they play Club Brugge at the Constant Vanden Stock stadium and Genk have gone third (that's the Europa Legue spot).
Anderlecht did not hit top form and won by a single goal from Kanu. Gent deserved a point. For Genk, hats off to Jelle Vossen and Christian Benteke who both got two goals in a 4-2 win. Earlier Club Brugge had defeated Standard 2-0. With Standard putting out a rather inexperienced team, the result was never in doubt.
